Continuing with the Ersa Major field trials, in mid-June, ten thousand fans descended on Hanley Park for Saturday's concert and were treated to performances from X Factor star Diana Vickers, Craig David, Lee Ryan, The Saturdays, Dane Bowers and many other well known names.

As well as teenage revellers the concert also attracted families.

The system consisted of two hangs of eight Ersa Majors at the stage with twelve PUKK-218 subs. The delay tower consisted of TRS-118Hs and TRS-115s. The stage monitors were TRS-115s and TRS-218s.

Several different sound engineers ran the system and comments were made about the ease of use and sound clarity.

  ERSA MAJOR... enjoys rising popularity.

During the last month OHM have had a series of very successful road tests of the new ERSA MAJOR line array.

Over the May bank holiday weekend in England, ERSA MAJOR was used at Stoke Premier League football club’s “Player of the Year” event in Britannia Stadium which was a huge success.

The sound system comprised of 16 ERSA MAJOR mid/high cabinets and 12 PUKK-218 subs, amplified with OHM CFU amplifiers. Giving a completely even sound coverage and excellent clarity the ERSA MAJOR system out-performed expectations.

At the same time in Poland the ERSA MAJOR was also getting outstanding results in a series of concerts with many top class polish acts, icluding LZY.

For over 13 years Pop & Rock Band “LZY” has been one of the most popular and prolific concert performers in POLAND. The band gained its countrywide popularity with platinum album “Concern in Loneliness”

Band sound engineer, Wojtek “VARRAN” Cichocki, was very impressed by the sound of our new ERSA MAJOR sound system.

That's why we are pleased and honored that “LZY” decided to include OHM in their sound rider as their preferred system.

Being a fan of high energy sound “ VARRAN” can hardly wait to use ERSA MAJOR on ACIDs upcoming concert.

ERSA MAJOR... a force to set volcanoes moving

Wednesday 14th April at 4pm was the test run for the new OHM ERSA MAJOR linearray system. The clarity is **** amazing one passerby was heard to shout as the sound was spread across the length and breadth of Knutsford on a clear sunny afternoon. There were onlookers from near and far thinking there was a concert on and a few plane loads of people got more than they bargained for ...

Completing the system, the new PUKK Subwoofers added ground shaking bass to complement the clarity of the ERSA's

Of course Icelandic volcanoes don't blow because of our sound but was it really a coincidence that the already active Eyjafjallajoekull volcano in Iceland erupted again?

Long Throw Speakers?

For most of their first two years in the Premier League, Stoke City FC has been using twenty-four TRS-115s for their match day sound system.

At a recent match our roving photographer captured this shot of Stoke’s Irish International, Rory Delap with a speaker aloft, assisted by HSL sound crew. Rory has the reputation of having the longest and most accurate throw in English football although we didn’t try to find out how far he could throw our speakers.

Elsewhere in the club, a number of KS-3s in white have been installed in the hospitality rooms.

Pasi has been an OHM distributor in his native land of Finland for over four years and in that time has developed a fondness for OHM products as well as being a regular visitor to England. He is joined by his partner, Kirsi who ably assists him with testing and documentation. "Kirsi and I are very pleased to be in England and working for such a well respected sound company. I hope that my experience in design, installation and production touring will help the company produce some really useful products." Says Pasi, "We have been made most welcome here, even the weather has been arranged to remind us of home." For technical advice please contact support@ohm.co.uk

After a period in regional sales, Gareth Coleman has been appointed sales manager responsible for our installation, rental and re-sale customers in the UK.

30 Years of OHM
smoking boots ad Like many companies in the sound industry OHM has its roots in live music. Jo Olenski played bass in numerous pro bands in the Manchester area and in his quest for better sound decided to set up his own factory to produce quality speaker enclosures. Many well known companies had cabinets made by OHM in those early days including Carlsbro, Martin Audio, Mission, Celestion, HH, Bell and Dynacord but it was with the OHM brand that the company really made its mark.

Many of our Backline products made in the 70's and 80's are still in use today and command high prices on internet auction sites. OHM was the first to introduce Graphic EQ Bi- Amp Bass systems utilising multiple ten inch speakers which was much copied by others. Alan Price, the Smiths, Buzzcocks, Sad Café and Aerosmith are just a few of the bands that toured with OHM amplification. A 1983 vintage GA125 bass amp is still in regular use in the Knutsford showroom to the delight of visiting musicians. In 1983 the company moved to a purpose built factory for both Backline and PA introducing a range of 19” rack mounted amplifiers and the start of the production line for loudspeaker chassis. During the late '80s the emphasis was still on live sound and acts such as Status Quo, Paul Young and Black Sabbath used OHM PA systems in various parts of the world.

The 90's saw a change in the disco and dance club scene and the rise of the “Super Club”. Even the smallest venues were now requesting professional loudspeaker systems and the big clubs demanded something really special. A major live system called the SMAKSTAK was already in use in large outdoor festivals and concerts and the super club owners saw this and wanted it to be installed in their venues.

The SMAKSTAK sub will be relaunched at this year's PLASA with updated drivers and a new paint finish.

The SMAKSTAK featured in both The Bizness and Main Street dance clubs in Blackpool's Golden Mile; the Bizness nightclub was originally opened in 1992. In 1997 the owners sold the Bizness to Northern Leisure and embarked on a five year venture to convert the former ABC Cinema into the Syndicate super club. The ABC has had a long musical heritage; hosting on its revolving stage 60's icons such as Cliff Richard, Tommy Steele, Cilla Black and the Beatles. Retaining the revolving stage as the dance floor and dividing the building up into three distinct areas required a very comprehensive sound system. OHM loudspeakers and amplifiers were specified throughout and in order to provide something new and revolutionary, OHM engineers designed the HD system.

With in-fills and background speakers almost every product in the OHM portfolio was utilised to make this 4300 capacity dance club one of the largest and most successful in the UK.

This is just a small sample of our history and in the words of Jo Olenski “However nice it is to be nostalgic we must always be looking to the future and continue to design and develop our innovative products for at least another thirty years.”

What’s new from OHM...
Ersa Major Launch

Introducing the all new Ersa Major

The latest addition to the Planet Suite, the Ersa Major has dual OHM 10” midrange speakers with a 2”+1” Coaxial Compression Driver mounted on a proprietary wave guide. The midrange drivers are mounted at the rear creating a fully horn loaded cabinet having a compact size of 750mm wide, 600mm deep and 300mm high. The 16 ohm Ersa Major is a three way active cabinet, has a flat frequency response (± 3dB) from 100Hz to 20Hz and a maximum SPL in excess of 145dB.

A comprehensive flying system enables the Ersa Major to be used as a full line array for festivals and large dance stack configuration.

Smakstak SS-30   SS-30 SMAKSTAK Subwoofer - Re-birth of a Legend!

Designed in the 1990's to satisfy the needs of the “super clubs”, the OHM SMAKSTAK or alternatively know as the SS-3 became a legend throughout the then known world.

With more horn than Spearmint Rhino and as smooth as a pint of Guinness this sub has delighted audiences from Blackpool's Golden Mile to the Great Wall of China. As part of our thirty year celebrations we have brought back this legendary speaker with a lick of paint a spiffing face lift and an all new OHM driver.

The SS-30 has a folded horn length of 2.7 meters made in birch ply within an enclosure of less than half a cubic meter.

The single 16 ohm, 400 watt driver gives a phenomenal SPL in excess of 138dB (144dB stack as shown) with a -3dB low frequency point of 32Hz and will be an ideal companion for the ERSA MAJOR.

HGW Invisible Subwoofers

HGW : the Invasion of the Invisible Sub

The HGW is a range of “invisible” subs intended to be heard and not seen. The trend for high standard interior design in entertainment and catering venues has created a demand for subs to be architecturally concealed and not taking up valuable floor space.

The HGW meets this need with the first two models now in production.

The HGW-10 is a horn-loaded cabinet having a 10” driver in an enclosure 800mm x 425mm x 300mm and the HGW-12 is a fourth order band pass sub in a 540mm x 400mm x 350mm enclosure.

The Carolus Borromeus Church situated in Antwerp City in the heart of Belgium is now one of the newest additions to the Ohm installation list. Due to the great size of the majestic church Ohm speakers have been installed throughout, providing the voice of the Priest to the masses.

The project was managed by OHM Benelux in Belgium by Willy Van De Velde. Willy specified the use of BR-8's and KS-1's for equally distributed sound. The cabinets were provided in white to compliment the churches existing outstanding interior.

New UK Dealer

As a member of a well established Lancashire Showman's dynasty, David Hackett has long been an OHM user and an advocate of good fairground sound. Recently handing over the day to day running of his rides to his son David Junior, David has started promoting OHM round the fairgrounds in the UK.

“Fairgrounds bring a unique set of problems for the sound provider” says Dave “The system must supply high quality music reproduction and clear announcements to the public whilst on the ride without interfering with adjacent attractions. I have used OHM for a number of years and I am pleased to become a dealer of their products.” The Hackett family recently visited the Knutsford factory and the picture shows three generations from Dalton aged two to David Senior, now in his eighty-third year.
