21st Birthday, remember the fun…

In 1904 meeting room 12 in the House of Commons the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society was formed and later that year the first Royal Welsh Agricultural Show was held. Over one hundred years have past and support for the life and trade of the agricultural community keeps on growing. In recent years the YWFA (Young Welsh Farmers Association) have been given a break from there hard work to let off some steam, a four day festival ground was delivered now known as, “The Young Peoples Village.”

Over the next four days the ground would become home to not only local talent but also world renowned DJ’s and chart topping pop acts.

I received a phone call from Dave at Red Flame productions asking if I would like to visit the show, he also explained how this would be the 21st year in which they were providing audio systems, to many the 21st year is a milestone in any lifespan and should be celebrated.

After a long drive through the beautiful Welsh countryside on July 20th we arrived in Builth Wells to crowds of people all pleased with the sun filled day. I met up with Dave and he gave me the tour of the stage where he had put into place a TRS system, 6 x TRS-218s and   6 x TRS-212s and the TRS-115s acting as DJ monitors.

The night began and the 6000 capacity tent was full, the seas of festival goers were soon fixated on the DJ and became slaves to the music. The TRS delivered clarity throughout leaving no corner without vibe. At 11:30 p.m. headlining act appeared, Radio One’s Dave Pearce and just as you thought the night had peaked the whole venue erupted and you were consumed by the atmosphere.

I would like to thank Dave and the team at Red Flame Productions for welcoming us to the festival, I would also like to congratulate them for 21 years at the show using OHM products and wish them all the best for many more years to come.

From Ferrari to Maybach

After being the speaker of choice for the flagship store in Milan for Ferrari, …OHM were given the task of flawlessly ensuring the elegance and style of the Maybach museum was in keeping with the name that is synonymous with the most luxurious of motor vehicles.

Maybach is a brand name that represents elegance, luxury and prestige. They have been producing motor vehicles since 1909. Wilhelm Maybach himself revolutionised the industry with the first combustion engine for a personal vehicle in 1885.

Maybach is amongst the world’s most exquisite car manufacturers, with such brand ambassadors as Cristiano Ronaldo, Simon Cowell, Nick Faldo, P.Diddy, and Donald Trump.

In the town of Neumarkt (near Nuremberg) Germany, the Maybach museum is home to some of the worlds rarest models, cars which had limited production runs and a lucky survival of the Second World War. The museum houses the timeline of the Maybach brand dating back to the works from Wilhelm and his son Karl.

To keep Maybach’s image of excellence the museum was created in exactly the same manner. To go with the modern building and historic images, The speaker of choice for SLD Mediatec was OHM, providing the halls and galleries with background music to accompany the mood and concept of the building and brand.

The system for the function room comprised of x BR-12, 3 x BR-6 and 2 x BR-15B, the halls and galleries became home to 24 x White BR-5 and 12 x CL-1T ceiling speakers.

GLASTONBURY

The Round Up

The final live performance of the Festival last night was Blur on the main stage but the DJs in Sangri La continued until dawn. A steady stream of festival goers made their way past our field to the Stone Circle to see the sunrise and were rewarded with a thunder storm at 3am. People are starting to go home and all the roads around the site are jam packed. I decided to wait until the evening and spent the day helping break down the Biggles bar and camp. Unfortunately the draft beer and cider ran out on Saturday so it was down to cans and vodka jellies. (Note for next year: bring more beer).

One of my best impressions of the festival was its organisation. The site was broken down into stage areas and fields and hundreds of small teams looked after their own little bits, living together next to their work space and enjoying a great atmosphere. Going out into the public areas was a bit of an adventure with so many people on the move but the general atmosphere was good natured and polite. Apart from the occasional drunk falling into the toilet pit (as in Slumdog Millionaire) there were very few incidents.
I really enjoyed my first Glastonbury and would like to thank the Biggles band and their helpers for making me so welcome as a temporary member of the crew.

The last word goes to Biggles’s Graham Buckley “We had over twenty-five acts on the Bandstand from a very melodious harp and vocal duo to an “in your face” seven piece dub band and the OHM system handled them all perfectly. We can’t wait to go on the road with it.”

Once more the Bandstand was filled this morning with an ensemble of musicians providing a gospel service for passers-by led by Biggles own "Reverend Green".

Saturday: Croissant Neuf Bandstand

By the end of the weekend the Crossiant Neuf Bandstand will have played host to 25 acts including guitar/vocalist Darren Poyzer, singer/songwriter Mik Artistik and the Boat Band.

Having managed to get away from the sound system, I searched out my old favourites Rolf Harris, Tony Christie, John Otway and the Magic Numbers - so now my musical tastes have been revealed.

The weather has been hot with the odd thunderstorm and the mud so far is only ankle deep.

GLASTONBURY

Friday: An Imposter Amongst Us

There have been wide spread rumours that OHM's own Clive Kinton has been seen in and around Glastonbury. As is plainly obvious from the picture we have received the man is an imposter. If you are approached by this man do not part with you hard earned money as he will only run straight to the beer tent and proceed to turn it into liquid assets.

Thursday: The Music Begins.

LX Series speakers provide the sound for the Bandstand where tonight seven different bands have performed for the crowded Croissant Neuf area of the Glastonbury Festival. The Biggles wartime band was amongst those playing tonight.

Tomorrow there will be an acoustic set and then later five more bands will be entertaining the crowds.

"I may be standing ankles deep in the mud due to the inevitable rain but the beer flows and the atmosphere is electric and right at this moment there is no better place I can think of being." Clive said.

Wednesday: The set up.

A hot and sunny day for the arrival of the first of the expected 135,000 festival goers, Biggles is ready for take off with the beer cooled and all systems tested. The bandstand starts tomorrow afternoon and will go on until the early hours of Monday morning.

Glastonbury is a charity event, this year the main recipients are Oxfam, Greenpeace and Wateraid but all around the festival there are many more organisations raising money for good causes.

Biggles supports the Communication Workers Union Humanitarian Aid, made up of employees of Royal Mail and BT who take convoys of essential supplies to developing countries. Their last convoy was to a Romanian orphanage with band chef Alex.

The festival grounds are taking shape, with over 30,000 staff and crew working late into the night erecting tents, stages and refreshment areas. The Biggles crew has had a steady start completing our accomodation and catering facilities and will start installing OHM sound to the bandstand tomorrow.

What Clive is really thinking, "OK so there's the bandstand now where's the beer tent?"

OHM in Glastonbury Debut

The famous Glastonbury festival, founded in 1970, will this year feature an OHM sound system in the Croissant Neuf field.
Apart from the great Pyramid stage the Croissant Neuf is the longest established venue at the Glastonbury festival and is always completely solar powered. Hosting a fantastic array of musicians from Classical to Electronica, Folk to Hip-hop, Rock to Reggae - there is always something to entertain and enthral all ages.

Situated in the heart of the Greenfields, the focus is on Renewable and Sustainable Energy - all amplified music, lighting and everything else in the field is run on Solar Power, plus the occasional wind turbine.

OHM will feature on the new Croissant Neuf bandstand – a central feature of the field where festival goers can be delighted by all sorts of amazing talented musicians, poets or street style acts. The field itself is a feast to the eye with breathtaking sculptures and garden areas mostly contributed by local craftspeople.
The Bandstand will be run by the Biggles Wartime Band, a Cheshire based ensemble of musicians and poets who have a long association with Glastonbury. They have an OHM LX system in their venue in Hyde which will travel to the festival with them, to provide sound for all the artists performing on the bandstand.

OHM sales manager, Clive Kinton, will become an honorary roadie for the duration and do his best to see that the sound (and the beer) is up to standard.

Biggles leader and bandstand manager Graham Buckley says “We are pleased to welcome Clive to our crew and look forward to running the OHM sound system at this prestigious event. Relying as we do on solar power, we have had to do power consumption tests and find that the overall efficiency of the OHM amplifiers and speakers allows us to work well within the very tight power budget.”

Keep up with Clive's adventures on his mini blog here during the festival which runs from the 25th to the 28th of June

From the Sopranos to Scotland

On January 10th 1999 a multi award winning and record breaking television show “The Sopranos,” aired for the first time in the United States. This show was sculptured round a fictional Italian American and his mobster style crime syndicate. A British group Alabama 3 had written, “Woke up this morning,” a song describing violence with a sense of calm, this stood out and took the attention of the show producers and then went on to feature in the title credits for all six seasons. The group have gone on to produce some of the finest music in there unique style.

On the 9th May 2009 the group played in Ayrshire, Scotland at the venue known as Largs. One 2 Company provided the sound and this is what One 2’s Jamie Ballantyne had to say,

“Our rental stock required an affordable yet well constructed set of monitor cabinets for varying styles of music and performance -we found that the OHM TRS-115s offer great value for money yet are extremely easy to use - achieving high vocal level and 'musicality' without excessive EQ and the associated problems that brings. This we feel, is a testament to the overall response and build quality of the TRS-115.

On a recent hire to "The Alabama 3", front man Larry Love exited the stage after the show and hugged One 2's Drew Kirkland -"best monitor sound we ever had!"
Then came back later to say it yet again!

With compliments like these and the others we've had we intend to purchase more TRS-115 very shortly.”

The Premier Leagues loudest challenge OHM

Premier League competitors Stoke City have this year been crowned the loudest stadium in the league by the audio tech team of SKY+HD. The fans, despite fighting relegation that will send them back down to the Coca Cola championship, have been congratulated for their unwavering dedication and incredible vocal support. With a mere 28,383 fans in the stadium they still out cheer champion supporters such as Arsenal and Manchester United.

OHM is proud to have been selected to take on this challenging environment, to be able to clearly announce goal scorers, substitutions, etc and the all important entrance theme for the team. 24 x TRS-115’s are the product of choice to compete with the cheers of glory and groans of frustration. HSL’s Warren Barlow added, “The club is delighted with the systems and we feel confident that we will be adding further OHM products to this marvellous stadium.”

Tokyo bar

Tokyo Night Clubs back on track

When you ask Aaron Mellor – director of the northern-grown, dance brand rich, Tokyo Industries – where it all started for him, a telling smile creeps across his face as he begins to talk about the nascent ‘Madchester’ scene of the late 1980s. Growing up in Manchester, Aaron was caught in the wave of musical creativity that saw bands like New Order, Inspiral Carpets and The Stone Roses inspire the birth of new indie”
When the city was at this cultural peak in ‘91, Aaron moved north to Newcastle to study architecture and discovered that this new territory, in comparison, was seriously lacking in musical creativity. He channelled his passion for music, and fuelled his student lifestyle, through DJing at club nights for promoters Mick Rayner and Steve Forster (the latter becoming AMG’s operations director before joining Barfly) at Rank Leisure’s Studio/Ritzy venue (now Liquid), where he went on to establish his own night Bulletproof some 17 years ago. “But I started to get this fear that you can’t DJ forever and thought I’d better buy a club,” laughs Aaron, “although I continue to DJ even now!”    More >>

Manchester’s raw, industrial clubbing culture is introduced to a high-end peer

Manchester has long been synonymous with music and clubbing. Ever since Tony Wilson’s Factory Records made its future-shaping mark on the city, it has been a hotbed for musical phenomenon and clubbing paradises. True to the ‘up for it’ nature of the place, the types of clubs that have grown to significance, on a local and national level, have been fairly raw, but very appealing thanks to their focus on the sound system and music, and less so their décor and service standards.

When Paul Bosomworth travelled north from London, he was amazed at the lack of higher end clubs populating the Manchester market and pinpointed a gap following his own experiences, as
he revealed: “I only moved up here permanently about eight weeks ago and already I’m fed up with going out because there’s nowhere decent. The talk here now is if you want to have a decent night out, you’ll go to the casino to escape the crowds.”    More >>

Bacchus Lounge

Bacchus Lounge, Warrington

For newcomer operator Paul Wright, it must have felt that the world was against him when he set out to introduce a wine bar to the villagers in Culcheth, near Warrington. It proved to be a long and arduous battle embittered with on-site demonstrations by members of the public and the council, a slanderous anti-wine bar website and a barrage of accusations against Paul’s reputation. Paul joked: “If the villagers could actually take me outside and burn me like the Wicker Man they would!”     More >>

Bottle and Chimney-Hyderabad

Bottle and Chimney-Hyderabad

The Bottle and Chimney is one of the most successful lounge bars in Hyderabad. Owned by Mr. Sanjay Batla it is a 5 year old venue. When we met Mr. Batla 6 months back he had close to 22 cabinets with at least 10 amps driving the sound in this venue and still it did not have enough power. The venue size is 3000 sq foot ground floor with a 2000 sq foot mezzanine floor.

Harness was entrusted with the job of designing the audio and lighting system of the venue. Mr Batla wanted a clean look with the minimum number of speakers but it should be powerful. After carefully looking at the size of the venue, we could only think of one product that could do the job. So a combination of TRS-118H and TRS-112H was used. When Mr Batla and the DJ were told that only 3 amps would be needed to drive 6 subs and four tops to run three way active they could not believe it. It was only when the system was fired up and aligned that the whole BOTTLE and CHIMNEY was shocked at the power that hit them full in the face.

Specified System.
6 x TRS-118H, 4 x TRS-112H, 3 x CFU-A3, 1 Cred MK2.

Z1 Nightclub Varkaus Finland

Z1 Nightclub Varkaus Finland

Z-one is a high class night club in the city of Varkaus, Finland. There are only 23,000 people living in the city, a local entrepreneur wanted to build something completely new and different. There weren't any good venues for live music and this was a very good reason in his mind for him to do this. Z-one has about 1000 m2 of floor space and can take about 800 customers.

The venue needed a sound system capable of creating quality sound and appropriate sound levels everywhere with delay speakers. The main PA-system was supposed to be bi-functional, taking care of sound for the dance floor and able to be effective as the PA for visiting bands. There was also a need for a separate system in the Suomipop-bar, a small separate area focusing on Finnish dance and pop music. more

DJ Karnter Record attempt

DJ Karnter breaks continuous mixing world record by 13 hours

At 1pm on Saturday 1st September, DJ Karnter finally played the last tune in his marathon 101 hour world record attempt.  DJ Karnter now has to wait 6 weeks for official confirmation from The Guinness Book of World Records, but is hopeful as all criteria were fulfilled.

Speaking after he finished, the DJ said “This was the hardest thing I have ever done, I have been hallucinating and I can’t feel my fingers anymore”. He praised the support he had received from his wife Sarah, the Event sponsors, which included OHM UK Ltd and Numark and the online community that have been watching the event via webcam.

OHM UK Ltd supplied the sound system for the Event, comprising 2 x BR-12, 2 x Moon Subs, 2 x CFU-A2 amps and a CRED-2.6 controller.

“The system was amazing” says Karnter “The bass just kept pushing me on, it was incredible”

After the event, OHM took DJ Karnter out for a well earned beer along with the owner of the host venue, Matt Green of djbargains.co.uk.

The attempt was to raise money for the Nordoff-Robbins Charity which uses musical improvisation to form a therapeutic relationship with children and adults with a wide range of needs and difficulties. If you would like to contribute to this well deserving cause go to www.justgiving.com/djkarnter

We will be speaking to Karnter once he has got out of bed for more insight into his marathon set and he will be visiting the OHM stand at PLASA ’07 on Monday 10th September.

This is the second World Record achieved using OHM equipment, the first being the longest continuous live gig which stands testament to the robustness of OHM product.
